SD Gundam is set during the Cosmic Era of Earth’s future when humanity has been divided into two distinct subset of human, the “normal” humans of Earth known as the “Naturals” and the genetic offshoots that dwell upon the numerous space colonies known as the “Coordinators”. The Coordinators have aligned to form PLANT, and with it their own military known as ZAFT that repeatedly attacks Earth in the hope of seizing its Gundam as well as gaining control of the planet. The Earth Alliances have rallied together and launched a nuclear attack on PLANTS agricultural satellite, destroying it completely and thus marking the start of open war with the two factions.

The game is based off the popular manga cartoon Gundam SEED, more specifically the SD Gundam offshoot (SD meaning Super Deformed, which represents a particular style of anime in Japan), which is a classic space Opera created by Sunrise Studio. The SD Gundam MMO by Joyfun takes this tale and allows players to control their own Gundam, gigantic sized mechanised robots (otherwise known as Mobile Suits) and establish a private military base.

The focus of gameplay consists of collecting your Gundam to create a powerful formation, which is made up of a maximum of three Gundam, assigning pilots to fly/drive the Gundam and upgrading them with various plug-ins or using the Evolution chamber to increase their skills and abilities. Gundam come in various qualities, similar to the system used in other MMO’s, from lowest to highest White (C grade), Green (B grade), Blue (A grade), Purple (S grade) and Orange (SS grade); the higher a Gundam’ quality the higher their own personal Battle Power. When in a players formation then the formation itself will give its own Battle Power devised from the three Gundam placed in it (as well as the pilots assigned to them, each of which also have their own quality and Battle Power).

Players can enter instances, PVE zones where they can earn rewards and key components, which costs the player “vitality” to enter, often seen as “energy” or “stamina” in various other MMOs, that limits how many times a player can enter an instance. However, this vitality does slowly regenerate over time or alternatively players can purchase items to instantly refresh it. Instances can either be tackled in Normal mode as many times as a players vitality will let them, or in Heroic mode once a day, which offer better rewards. Players can also try their nations out in the PvP Arena, challenging other players and trying to increase their own battle rank, which as well as acting as a symbol as to how proficient a player is in PvP will also grant them defensive and damage buffs and extra rewards in combat the higher their rank.

The game is completely free to play but there are VIP options open to players that can be purchased with real-world currency and open up more features and give much more free resources and access ability to the game.
